Why form is important for runners

Why form is important for runners

Jogging is one of the easiest exercises in the world. You are designed to run, so you don’t have to worry about learning any techniques or rules… or at least this is what you thought. Once you started reading about running, you found out that most professional runners work on their “form”. What does this mean and how it can help you?

  • If you have some experience with running, you know that if you run at a certain pace you will be able to last longer. On the other hand, if you try to run faster, slower or to raise your feet higher, you will get tired very fast. Your body has a natural running “form,” and it takes a lot of experience and practice to find it. Did you find the perfect rhythm and style of running? Then you found your form.
  • Improving your form will help you run faster. Over the years, it was proven by many athletes that running in your natural form can help you run faster. While this is not a great advantage if you are an amateur, it can be really useful when you run in a competition.
  • It will help you avoid injuries. Your body knows how to run to avoid any injury. If you try to force your muscles and ligaments to move in a certain way, you will eventually get a tearing.
  • You will have better resistance. Apparently, runners who run in their form need less oxygen when they run; this means that your body will not have to put so much effort into running, and you will be able to go on longer distances. The only problem is that once your body gets used to running in a certain style, your muscles will become less “active” and you can get injured. The conclusion? Find your form, and adapt it when you feel less comfortable with it.
